Block

Block is empowering the global economy. As an Internal Communications partner at Block, I provide exec comms support and create content strategies that help employees feel connected to what’s happening on their teams, to each other, and the larger Block organization.

Made up of Square, Cash App, Afterpay, TIDAL, Bitkey, and Proto, Block builds technology to increase access to the global economy. In 2024, Block functionalized. This means that rather than being organized internally by brand (Cash App or Square), the company reorganized into functions, or what people do. As a result, I was promoted into the role of Internal Comms Partner for the Design and Sales orgs—representing about 2,500 employees.

Including the below highlights, my scope as Internal Communications Partner includes event support, editorial, crisis comms, change management comms, and more.

Content strategy on newly consolidated teams

Teams coming together across different brands under one leader means employees need an easier way to understand who does what, what's happening across teams, and how to partner. To help employees find the information they need, I developed a Slack-based newsletter solution for Block's design organization. Based on insights from designer listening tours, I created a bi-weekly, skimmable format that centralized critical updates, resources, and opportunities. The newsletter provided a consistent platform where designers could stay informed about team developments in under five minutes, addressing the challenge of scattered information across multiple channels.

Channel strategy + intranet maintenance

In order to get work done, you need to be able to understand where to go for what, and how information is organized. A huge part of this is ensuring employees are clear about what to expect in Slack vs. email vs. an intranet (and that a company’s intranet is up-to-date). Following recent company changes, I partnered with the larger internal comms team to map out our channel strategy and build out a proof of concept for an internal Block Home page.

Executive communications support

Leaders are busy, and need people they can trust to help them craft messages that’ll resonate with their teams (and keep them focused on the bigger picture). I partner with executives for both routine comms and major moments of change or crisis. As an example, I helped the head of Square Sales on his bi-weekly newsletter, and recently drafted a message of gratitude on leaders’ behalf to the team after a recent payment processing outage.
